Brown, Sr.</h2></td> <td align="right" valign="bottom" class="nav_links"></td> </tr> <tr><td align="right" valign="bottom"><span class="content_date">2/5/2010</span></td></tr> </table> <div class="blue_line"></div> <br> One of the great ILA figures, Edward L. Brown, Sr. of Hampton Roads, Virginia, passed away this morning, February 5, 2010. ILA President Hughes stated that  the death of Ed Brown today leaves a void in the lives of the ILA family that will be hard to replace, if ever it can be. Ed did a tremendous job for the membership of the ILA and particularly those Brothers and Sisters in the port of Hampton Roads. <br /><br /> Ed began his ILA career when he joined ILA Local 1248 in 1956. He worked as a longshoreman and went on to represent the local in various positions. He rose to become President of the local, a position he then held for eighteen years. Ed s energy and passion for representing his members led him to be elected to the ACD Executive Board in 1983 and in 1987 to the ILA Executive Council as a Vice President representing the Port of Hampton Roads in Virginia. He continued to hold both positions until his death. <br /><br /> During this time Ed improved the lives of countless ILA members and their families by negotiating good contracts and serving as a trustee on various committees. He also championed civil rights and social and economic justice for working people. Ed played an instrumental role in the establishment of MILA. ILA President Hughes remarked that  the ILA s ability to create this great health care plan for thousands of ILA members and their families would never have happened without Ed. President Hughes continued to state that  Ed s legacy will be measured by all of those members in the ILA family whose lives he helped improve throughout his career. <br /><br /> Ed was also active in his community, in local and national politics and his church.
