class="blue_line"></div> <br> <p><b>ORLANDO, FL</b> (September 3, 2009) ILA Wage Scale delegates unanimously rejected a proposed two-year contract extension offered by United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) at meetings in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday, September 2, 2009. All terms of the current six-year agreement will now remain in effect until September 30, 2010. USMX sought to alter the terms of the final year of the current six-year agreement, including deferring a scheduled ILA wage increase for a year in exchange for their immediately lifting the Container Royalty Cap and beginning to bridge the salary gap between the lower and higher tiered wages that ILA members earn. But USMX refused to address ILA s concern on new technology and rejected union s demand to freeze introduction of new technology throughout the term on the extended contract. <p>ILA Wage Scale delegates worked for two-days in Orlando, Florida. USMX sought to change the terms of the final year of the current contract, which is to begin next month on October 1, 2009, in exchange for contract enhancements, most of which would have kicked in during the two-year extension period. Among these enhancements offered by USMX was the immediate removal of Container Royalty Cap. Wage increases would have begun in the second (beginning October 1, 2010 and third year (beginning October 1, 2011) of new extension while higher wage increases for tiered wage ILA longshore workers would have begun in the third year. The USMX proposal would have increased the base wage for lower tiered ILA workers to $20.00 as of next month which, in some cases, might have meant a $4.00 an hour increase for some workers.</p> <p>USMX insisted on retaining its right to introduce new technology during the period of the extension which ILA Wage Scale delegates felt was too important to ignore.
