Master Contract Extension Promotes Stability and Will Spur Growth at All ILA Ports</h2></td> <td align="right" valign="bottom" class="nav_links"></td> </tr> <tr><td align="right" valign="bottom"><span class="content_date">11/18/2009</span></td></tr> </table> <div class="blue_line"></div> <br> <b>NEW YORK</b> - Richard P. Hughes, Jr., President, International Longshoremen s Association, AFL-CIO believed in the two-year contract extension he and ILA Wage Scale Committee delegates negotiated with United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) and ILA rank-and-file members ratified on Tuesday, November 17, 2009. The ILA leader relied on his more than half-century experience as an officer in the union to know that his membership and their employers would both benefit from this extension. <br /><br /> Especially since the new agreement satisfied USMX s desire for an early settlement that prevented diversion of cargo and brought them much-need financial relief and also gave the ILA members varying increases in wages for both senior and lower-tiered workers, plus the removal of the container royalty cap and stronger job protection with jurisdiction and new technology. <br /><br /> "I firmly believe we negotiated the best contract for our members," President Hughes repeatedly told ILA members during recent visits to Charleston, South Carolina; Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Bayonne, New Jersey just prior to the successful Nov. 17 ratification vote.  With economic conditions being what they are at the present time, I felt USMX s contract proposal was very fair and beneficial to all. <br /><br /> ILA members agreed. During Tuesday s 12-hour ratification vote, 6,417 members endorsed President Hughes efforts with a yes vote out of a total of 9,735. Now the industry is assured labor peace until September 30, 2012. <br /><br /> "I now believe that when our ILA members begin to work under this new agreement and start to reap the benefits of higher wages and the lifting of the container royalty cap, even those ILA members who might have voted against this contract will find that it s a very good one," President Hughes said.
